Grand Canyon University
Masters of Education in Elementary Education
by Graduate,
This is a great program for education. It is very rigorous and challenging. I learned a lot from the course work and student teaching. This program gives you the skills needed to teach and manage a classroom. Curriculum is advanced and professionalism is incorporated to enhance you as an educator.
by Graduate,
I was in the situation of not being able to attend a traditional university for my graduate program (as I did for my B.A. and teaching credential programs). After searching for quite some time, looking for a university that had a distance education program that would meet the needs of my demanding schedule and that would be challenging and rewarding I decided on Grand Canyon University. During my 20 months of study, I found the staff to be very professional and personable. The instructors as well as the support staff (from office staff to tech support) were all very helpful. They always went the extra mile which made me feel that I made the correct decision. In fact, I never once wished that I had picked another school. The work load was heavy. I had to really time manage. I teach 45 hours per week so the 15-20 hours per week I had to devote to my graduate work stretched me to the extreme. Reflecting on that time I sometimes wonder how I was able to do it. However, the bottom line is I highly recommend GCU. I cannot speak for other areas outside of education, but I do feel that the Masters program in Education at GCU is top notch.

University of Maryland University College
by Graduate,
I graduated from UMUC in 2007 with my B.A. in English. Although expensive (I am an out-of-state student), it is a great school. The classes are NOT easy by any means and you will actually have to WORK for your degree. Most of the online professors that I had were incredibly encouraging and supportive. The only issues I had were involving the administration. When it came time for graduation they never mailed me my degree. I had to talk to about 20 people over several months before they finally sent it to me. And if you ever have to call them, make sure you have lots of free time. It's nearly impossible to get a human on the phone and when you do it's usually someone with a very thick foreign accent. But my overall experience eduction-wise was great and totally worth it.
by Graduate,
My experience at UMUC has been wonderful. My major was Computer and Information Science with a minor in Business Administration. The course format was great in that I took both online and face-to-face courses. The teams I was on during that time were great. It helped me to be a team player, meet deadlines and and work with many people, some in other countries. The cost of a UMUC education is quite reasonable. I work for a DoD contractor and I compel my co-workers, especially the military to work on their education.

Negative Reviews:

Fielding Graduate University
by Graduate,
It was one of the worst mistakes of my life. I was determined to finish my PhD. degree, and became short-sighted in the process. Upon admission, I was encouraged by the financial aid staff to take out the maximum in loans (about $18,500 a year), with no counseling whatsoever about the long-term effect this would have on my financial health. The advisers that Fielding employs are some of the worst. Just before I was dismissed from the program, I tried to reach my advisor for SIX WEEKS, before he contacted me one evening at 11 P.M. No one is accountable for these issues
it is always the student's shortcoming. The amount of feedback given by instructors is negligible, even in on-line courses. The professors are very knowledgeable and well-experienced, but are not often accessible. Often, my papers would be returned with only a grade, or a few sentences of commentary, after days AND WEEKS of research! Although I passed my comprehensive exams n the first try, not one word of feedback was provided. The tuition is exorbitant, and for little educational value other than the privilege of attending an APA accredited school. Do your research carefully, and make sure this learning model fits your needs. DO NOT plan to work more than part time, as you are paying for full time attendance regardless! Demand that you get the service you need from those who are working for you (you are paying their salary)! I didn't do this, and it was a grave mistake. In the end, I was academically dismissed within the context of a letter
no ongoing support was offered or given. And my dissertation proposal had already been written and most of the course work completed. Be careful!

Kennedy Western University
by Graduate,
After they did a hard sell and had me sign the payment plan...everyone became nearly impossible to reach, then the name changed. Every time I tried to contact someone to find out what was happening, what the next step was-I never received a reply. The 'degree' is long paid for, and now their web site states they are not accepting or 'reactivating' students....and they still have not responded to calls and emails. What a major $$ rip off!
